Athens Defense Stands Strong By Dennis Burton, Correspondent RALEIGH - For the second straight week Athens Drive’s defense kept its opponent out of the end zone. And for the second straight week, the Jaguars put a mark in the win column. Athens stuffed Enloe’s rushing attack and remained unbeaten with a 19-6 victory at home Friday night.
“This is the best defense we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Jags coach Jeff Smouse said. “We’ve had trouble stopping [Enloe] in the past, so we decided this year to stick with our basic defense and concentrate on staying home and finding the football. It worked for us.”
The Eagles struggled to move the ball most of the evening. They finished with just 174 yards of total offense.
Holding onto the ball was also difficult. Enloe (0-2) fumbled four times in the game and threw one interception.
“Their defense is a lot better than it has been,” Eagles coach Ron Clark said. “Plus, all our turnovers hurt us. We had a couple of chances to score and we fumbled.”
The Jags wasted no time, jumping out to a 7-0 lead on the first play of the game. Senior quarterback Ben Snotherly connected with senior wideout Louis Wilder for an 80-yard touchdown, and just 18 seconds into the game Athens (2-0) had a lead they would never relinquish.
“That big play to open the game really hurt us,” Clark said. “We had heard they had very little on offense, but we knew they had a good quarterback. We were able to regroup and play good defense for most of the game, but that play was big.”
Wilder’s second touchdown grab of the game put the Jags up 13-0 with 3:53 left in the first quarter. That was the score at halftime.
With 3.9 seconds left in the third quarter, Snotherly found Wilder for the third time in the end zone. This time from 19 yards out to put Athens up 19-0. Snotherly was 12-for-32 on the night for 211 yards. Wilder led all receivers with four catches for 127 yards.
Enloe’s only points came on a 60-yard interception return by Jonathan Addison with 5:35 left to go in the game.
With the win, Athens has now won 11 straight home games, a streak that goes back to an October 2008 loss to Fuquay-Varina.

Athens Drive Defeats Sanderson 41-13 Aug. 20
RALEIGH – Athens Drive has plenty of offensive fire power returning from last season, but it looks like the Jaguars' defense can be pretty good also, after Friday night's 41-13 win over Sanderson. Quarterback Ben Snotherly, runningback Kyree Green, and wide receiver Louis Wilder all put up outstanding numbers last year and took up where they left off. Snotherly did most of his damage in the first half, throwing for 198 of his 234 yards. He also threw touchdown passes of 17 and 29 yards to Wilder in the first half. Athens led 21-10 after the first quarter and at halftime. Wilder caught five passes for 154 yards, all in the first half. He banged his head late in the second quarter, felt dizzy, and the Athens coaching staff kept him out of the second half. Green, who rushed for 1700 yards last year, carried the ball 17 times for 101 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown run. Sanderson's touchdown came on a 78-yard kickoff return by J.R. Soto, who also had a 49-yard kickoff return in the game. The Jaguars defense held the Sanderson offense to a pair of Zach Powell field goals. "We were a good team, but we could have a better defense and a better team this year with thirty-some seniors," all-conference linebacker Zach Bender said. "We played well as a group tonight. Athens coach Jeff Smouse also saluted his defense. "We've got our skill players back and we expect a lot out of them," Smouse said. "Bender, safeties Steven Parrish and Kendal Burns and linebacker Cameron Boone all played well. Sanderson gave us problems in the third quarter and is definitely better than the final score indicates.'" A pair of fourth quarter Sanderson turnovers led to two late touchdowns by the Jaguars.
