Varsity won their match 3-0, In all 3 sets, Sanderson was ahead several times, but the Lady Jags regained the lead each time & finished each set w/ a decisive victory. Athens fell behind by 6 at the beginning of the 1st set, but Freshman Rachel Kinsey's serving closed the gap to 1 (8-9). The Athens offense (Seniors Camden Spade, Caroline Campbell, Callen Farringer & Tori Jefferson) then begin to pound Sanderson w/ hard, deep hits assisted by the the finesse of Senior setter Jennifer Hiteshew. Senior Cori Smith sealed the 1st set victory by serving several aces, & the Jags finished the set w/ a 25-21 win.
In the second set, Sanderson again jumped ahead initially, then it was back & forth betw/ Sanderson & Athens. Strong serving by Hiteshew, Farringer, Spade & Kinsey was again a key factor in the Athens win. Farringer & Sophomore Megan Westberg also contributed w/ some smart hits & tips. 2nd set score was again 25-21, Athens.
Athens won the 3rd set 25-18 due in part to Sanderson errors while Athens remained consistent, particularly in serving.

Athens Gets First Tri-9 Win Posted: 8/31/2010 9:57 PM
As published in The Cary News:

ATHENS GETS FIRST CONFERENCE WIN

By J. Mike Blake, Sports Editor
RALEIGH - When the Middle Creek and Athens Drive volleyball teams squared off on Thursday night, one thing was for sure – somebody was going to pick up their first conference win of the year.
The hosting Jaguars of Athens ensured that they were going to be that team, sweeping the Mustangs 25-14, 25-18 and 25-13.

Athens’ strongest point in the three matches was its ability to get quick points. In all, the Jags (3-2, 1-1) racked up 14 aces, while the Mustangs had all kinds of trouble returning those serves.

“Everybody contributed today as a whole,” Athens coach Angela Coticchio said. “We’ve been working on serving to spots on the court and today they did a good job executing today.”

The first set started with Athens jumping out to a 6-1 lead, then falling behind 8-6. The Jags closed out the set by winning 11 of the final 15 points. In the second set, it was Middle Creek that jumped out to the fast start, leading 6-1 an 10-4.

But Athens won 11 of the next 13 points to win back the lead, which it never relinquished.

In the third set, Athens led wire-to-wire. “Today was the first day that everybody had positive hitting percentages,” Coticchio said.

Senior Camden Spade led the Jags in kills, while Jennifer Hiteshew had half of her teams’s aces. Caroline Campbell had four aces.

It has been a frustrating start for Middle Creek, which returns four seniors from last year, including all-conference selection Taylor Pritchett, in addition to athletic sophomore Ashley Battle.

The Mustangs made the playoffs for the first time in school history last year, but have won just three sets in a 0-4 (0-3) start. “We couldn’t serve-receive the ball very well,” Middle Creek coach Rosemarie Piccirillo said. “Our seniors need to step up and put it on their shoulders and say ‘we want to get in the playoffs again.’”

Athens Drive vs. Middle Creek - Aug. 26 Posted: 8/31/2010 9:52 PM
The Varsity team dominated Middle Creek with a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-18, 25-13). Sophomore Outside Hitter Megan Westberg kept the Mustangs guessing by mixing it up on her attacks. The third set trouncing was due to the fact that Freshman Rachel Kinsey, and Seniors Caroline Campbell, Jennifer Hiteshew & Camden Spade were apparently competing among themselves for the most un-returnable serves. Way to go, ladies!

Both teams play at home again on Monday (8/30) against Sanderson, & then Tuesday (8/31) at Lee County High School in Sanford. See you there!

Athens Drive at Wake Forest - Aug. 24 Posted: 8/31/2010 9:49 PM
Unfortunately the Varsity squad lost their match 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 25-27). In all 3 sets the Cougars slipped ahead to significant leads, w/ the Lady Jags coming back to be competitive to the end. The Lady Jags' serving record for the evening was almost perfect, w/ only 3 serving errors in the entire match. Seniors Caroline Campbell & Camden Spade led the way with several aces. Camden & Callen Farringer were leading scorers; Callen's stealth attack w/ short tips over the net was particularly effective. Freshman Kayla Madia make some key passes under pressure at the end of the third set.
Looking forward to seeing you at the Lady Jags next matches this Thursday at home against Middle Creek. JV plays at 4:30, with the Varsity match scheduled for 5:30.

Athens Drive at Green Hope - Aug. 19 Posted: 8/24/2010 11:43 AM
The Varsity Lady Jags lost a tough match 3-1 (20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25). Senior Camden Spade led in attacks. The Varsity team has 6 returning seniors this year along w/ 6 underclassmen, giving Athens more depth on the bench than we have had in some time. We're looking forward to a great season for both teams.

There are three matches on the schedule this week: Garner at home on Monday, @ Wake Forest/Rolesville on Tuesday, & our next conference match this Thursday at home against Middle Creek. Play promises to be very competitive this season, so please come out to support our Lady Jags. JV matches are at 4:30 & Varsity at 5 PM.
